In order to promote and assist up-and-coming female streamers, Twitch has partnered with a charity organization, 1,000 Dreams Fund, to create a series of financial grants.
These grants, known as The 1,000 Dream Fund Twitch BroadcastHER Grant, can be used for many things: buying new equipment and upgrades, travel expenses for conventions and conferences, workshop training, and any other tools approved by Twitch and 1,000 Dreams Fund. The grants will range from $500 to $2,000.
However, according to the criteria on the grant’s webpage the streamers must already be Twitch Affiliated or a Partnered Broadcaster before they can be considered. The reason behind the partnership is to “raise awareness for the continued gender gap in financial funding for young women in the ever-expanding gaming and broadcasting space.” A study, provided by Polygon, showed that in 2016 over 35% of Twitch streamers were female. With that being said, there are no female streamers in the top 10 list.
In order to bring even more awareness to the campaign, 1,000 Dreams Fund will be hosting a livestream event next week. “Streams for Dreams” will be running from March 1st through April 1st and will highlight many popular female streamers throughout the event. Through their efforts, they are also hoping to reduce the harassment of female gamers during their streams.
The 1,000 Dreams Fund has been around since 2015, and the nonprofit’s goal is to support the “dreams of talented young women in need by providing access to critical funding, resources, and meaningful mentor relationships.” They help high school and college-age students fund their dreams in education, technology, business, studying abroad, and much more.
