The DC Universe has been undergoing some big changes lately with even more to come. Now, it’s seeming like the Green Lantern Corps is changing along with it. With production ramping up on their HBO Max series, all eyes are on everyone’s favorite space cops. It’s the perfect time to shake things up. Picking up after the shocking events of the last issue, issue #2 of Green Lantern from DC Comics sets the stage for a new era of Green Lanterns in more ways than one. Unfortunately for a fan-favorite Green Lantern that just died, he won’t live to see it.
**SPOILERS for Green Lantern #2 by Geoffrey Thorne, Dexter Soy, and Marco Santucci**
With the planet Oa becoming a recognized member of the newly formed United Planets, the Guardians of the Universe see fit to restructure their Green Lantern Corps. Unexpectedly, the Guardians cede 1200 sectors to the jurisdiction of the United Planets. The Green Lantern Corps is no longer responsible for these sectors’ protection. Additionally, this leaves over a thousand Lanterns without sectors of their own, freeing them up for a quest into the Dark Sectors.
Former Corps Leader John Stewart is tasked with leading this mission. But before he leaves, he shares a moment with the Teen Lantern Kelli Quintela. Promising that fellow Green Lantern Simon Baz will see her home safely, he asks the emerald adolescent to keep an eye on his friend. John knows just how hot-headed Simon can be.
Later, just as John and his squadron head into hyperspace, the Central Power Battery on Oa explodes. The resulting shockwave devastates the planet and catches the eye of spectators from across the DC Omniverse. When Green Lantern Corps member Jo Mullein of Far Sector arrives on the scene, she detects no living Lanterns in the vicinity. There she finds Kelli guarding Simon Baz’s body with an energy dome amongst the rubble.
Now that this fan-favorite has died, how will Simon’s fellow Green Lanterns react to the news? How will the Green Lantern Corps keep the peace without the Central Battery? We have no idea, but we’re curious to find out. Feel free to speculate in the comments below!
