When thinking of Grand Theft Auto, many gravitate immediately towards the giant cash cow that is Grand Theft Auto V. And with such a compelling story, alongside a beefy (though very buggy) online mode, it’s hard to blame them. Hell, I even have more hours than I can count in the game. Many Grand Theft Auto fans have been around much longer though, leaning more towards classics such as GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas, endlessly wishing for some sort of remaster or remake. If sources speaking to Kotaku are to be believed though, then this may just be the case. In an article released by them today, sources confirmed a remaster trilogy for GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, potentially bringing all three games to life.
According to the aforementioned sources, all three games will be running on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine and will sport new graphics alongside refreshed UIs, bringing the game up to speed. With that said though, there are some more dated-looking graphics here and there, thus keeping true to what made the original three titles so special. That may sound a little confusing, but the example they provided said it was akin to if you were to apply some heavy mods to the game in the modern-day.
Now for me personally, I’m actually interested to see when or if we’ll get to see this remastered GTA trilogy. I’ve never actually played GTA 3, Vice City, or San Andreas once in my life, so to have the chance to do so in fully remastered form would be a great way to see what all the hype is about. It’s worth noting though that, while Kotaku’s sources here have proved trustworthy in the past, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s unlikely, but possible these rumors end up falling through. We’ll have to wait on Rockstar’s play though to know for certain. If it is true though, the remastered trilogy will release on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Stadia, Android, and iOS. That is a lot of platforms.
