The Grand Theft Auto series will officially turn 25 this month, with the first game coming out way back in 1997. GTA is alone in celebrating the 25th anniversary, as Bioshock is also celebrating its 15th anniversary, while Fallout turned 25 recently as well. It is quite surreal for older players to realize how their favorite games are going strong decades after they were first experienced. It also shows that some games keep getting better and aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
GTA’s anniversary is proof that the series has gone into the annals of history as one of the greatest franchises in all of gaming. Selling hundreds of millions of copies and becoming the world’s most popular singular entertainment item, including movies. GTA 5came out almost a decade ago, yet it is still not only relevant but thriving. It is a mainstay of the gaming industry and continues to gain popularity.
GTA 25th Anniversary
With GTA 6right around the corner, it makes the anniversary all the sweeter. Maybe we might even see some information relating to the game soon.
GTA started off on November 28, 1997, originally a 2D top-down shooter that soon became 3D with GTA 3 and on. The series has always been surrounded by controversy, with people saying it incites violence and celebrates crime. That debate isn’t going anywhere, but it is clear that it is never the medium that is to blame, it is the consumer at the end of the day.
In October, the classic GTA Vice City turned 20 years old, and even if it wasn’t the first installment in the series, it was definitely a crucial part of the franchise in terms of popularity.
Rockstar is now hard at work on GTA 6, and even with all the recent leaks, the hype for the game continues to grow. According to current estimates, the game will probably make it into players’ hands in early 2024. Unfortunately for fans, the wait is going to be extremely long, but the game itself should be worth it.
