Due to increasing fears of legal action, many game modders operate in a gray area of development. With some studios like CD Projekt Red hiring their most talented modders, some publishers see them as direct competitors. For many, games like The Witcher and Grand Theft Auto are perfect for modifications that expand beyond the scope of the game. One such modder sought to culminate all of Rockstar’s 3D history into one project. Dubbed GTA Underground, the massive project started as modder dkluin wanted to combine all the maps from Grand Theft Auto III, GTA Vice City, both Manhunt games, and even Bully. The massive project even included new locations, all accessible in a modded version of San Andreas. Announced on the GTA forums was an update stating GTA Underground is closing due to fears of legal action from Take-Two Interactive.

What Does GTA Underground Closing Mean to Take-Two Interactive?
These closures come after various mods were already targeted just a few weeks ago by Take-Two Interactive. The ambitious mod started just a few years ago in 2014 as an expansion to San Andreas. Starting in 2014, the project evolved to encompass so much freedom across the various Rockstar worlds. Having to code and implement new animations and effects for Bully and Manhunt maps, the project was certainly large labor of love to these games. The closure of Underground is right after Take-Two interactive shuttered the reverse-engineered editions of GTA 3 and Vice City. GTA Underground and other mods could very well be next and the creators know the risk. While the mod has not received official communication from Take-Two, the cancellation is in fear of future legal issues. While Rockstar has stated its interest in creating a shared GTA world, those hopes have yet to be realized. With the GTA 5 expansion coming up for next-gen consoles, fans will just have to wait and see if these legal takedowns turn into something official.
