With the majority of the country on lockdown, people are looking for anything to keep them from going stir-crazy. Many outlets have begun hosting live movie nights with various production members. The good folks over at ComicBook.com have been putting on Quarantine Watch Parties for DC and Marvel movies. On April 7th, they and their readers watched Guardians of the Galaxy with director James Gunn. While answering questions on Twitter, Gunn revealed some information about the upcoming third entry in the series. Namely that it will focus heavily on Rocket Raccoon’s origins.
Marvel fans received bits and pieces of information on Rocket’s creation in the first two movies. Fans specifically asked about the scene at the Kyln that shows Rocket’s cybernetic enhancements. Check out the tweets below.
I’ll just say Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future – and a lot of this stuff (like the scars we’re about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along. #QuarantineWatchParty #GotG https://t.co/WLqoiG7Wzg

Part of the cybernetics apparently painfully placed in his body. One of my favorite moments in the movie. Rocket’s loneliness and disaffection is at the center of the franchise for me. #QuarantineWatchParty #GotG https://t.co/F2tGn8XggD

The disaffection Gunn speaks of was also featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 during Rocket’s scenes with Yondu. But neither movie has given an explanation as to where he came from or who created him. If this tease is any indication, we may be getting answers in the third movie. Whether these answers come in the form of flashbacks or through the main plot is unclear. But Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the more popular franchises within the MCU. And Rocket Raccoon is now a fan-favorite character. Gunn will undoubtedly give fans a worthwhile exploration of Rocket given his deep understanding of the character.
Unfortunately, there’s no telling when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released. Disney and Gunn clashed over problematic tweets Gunn made in the past. In between his firing and rehiring, Gunn signed on to direct a soft reboot for The Suicide Squad. Although Disney recently rearranged its upcoming slate of movies, there was no mention of Vol. 3. We’ll next see the team in Thor: Love and Thunder. But it may be a while before we get more of Rocket’s story.
