Last week we got a report that Harrison Ford would replace William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross in Thunderbolts, and now Deadline confirmed he will be in Captain America 4, subtitled New World Order. He will star opposite Anthony Mackie, Shira Haas, Tim Blake Nelson, and Carl Lumbly.
Hurt’s character has played a major role in the MCU across small and bigger roles in various films. He debuted in The Incredible Hulk and then appeared in Captain America: Civil War, Black Widow, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame. The plot is currently under wraps for Captain America 4, so we don’t know what it has in store for Harrison Ford. Since the character has often been tied to Steve Rogers, it is fitting for him to be tied to the new winged shield-wielder.
Harrison Ford takes his new role as “Thunderbolt” Ross to Captain America 4
The standalone film will follow Mackie with his new title as he abandons being Falcon. He had this journey set in Endgame and explored further in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which sealed his new superhero identity. The show’s writers, Dalan Musson and creator Malcolm Spellman, will pen the script with Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) directing.
Initially, Harrison Ford was only rumored in Captain America 4 after being confirmed for Thunderbolts. The team-up movie would be lonely without his character, which led to the recasting of the original actor, who died this past March at 71 years old. That will feature big names with Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Returning to the MCU for the film will be Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) and Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow).
Harrison Ford will have a big MCU year with Captain America 4 and Thunderbolts, as both will be a part of Phase 5 and release in the same year. While some delays have been seen in the MCU with Blade, Deadpool 3, and more, as it stands now, the former will release on May 3, 2024, and the latter on July 26.
