Disney is preparing to give one of its rides the movie treatment as it has released the teaser trailer for Haunted Mansion (seen below). The footage sets up some spooky fun with family-friendly scares with its all-star cast. The ghosts will come this summer in theaters on July 28, 2023.
The latest live-action take on the Disneyland ride—the previous one was released in bombed in 2003—is directed by Justin Simien (Bad Hair), showing Disney did its research to get a horror filmmaker to deliver the film. It was written by Katie Dippold (Ghostbusters), delivering some humor and light-heartedness to give it that Disney personality while maintaining its spooky nature.
The Haunted Mansion teaser trailer sets up its story with its cast filled with A-listers. A doctor, Gabbie (Rosario Dawson), and her son, Travis (Chase Dillon), move into an eyebrow-raising affordable mansion in New Orleans. Soon after moving in, they discover some supernatural forces. She enlists the help of a priest (Owen Wilson), scientist and failed supernatural expert (LaKeith Stanfield), a French Quarter psychic (Tiffany Haddish), and a historian (Danny DeVito). The film will also star Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, Winona Ryder, Dan Levy, and Hasan Minhaj.
Haunted Mansion teaser trailer delivers a Disney horror movie
Receiving the teaser trailer for Haunted Mansion reinforced Disney’s mission to make its rides into movies. In 2021, Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson led the Jungle Cruise movie, which has been greenlit for a sequel. The movie did not perform well at the box office with its $220 million due to the COVID pandemic hitting theaters, along with its duel release on Disney Plus. Theater attendance is not near what it was pre-pandemic, but it has improved dramatically, giving any theatrically released movie a chance to make a profit.
Fans of the ride should be able to spot plenty of Easter eggs packed into the teaser trailer for Haunted Mansion. That should keep fans satisfied until the summer when it hits theaters.
