This year, the Oscars announced the nominees for 2022’s Academy Awards via a live stream on Twitter hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan approximately six weeks before the airing of the film industry’s highest accolade. The 94th annual Academy Awards focuses on inclusivity with its theme of movie lovers unite. According to the Academy, it will celebrate the love of movies whether you’re a moviemaker, streaming movies at home, or watching a movie in a theater. To take it a step further, the Oscars are not only allowing fans to vote for their favorite film, but voters will be entered in special sweepstakes that will allow them to present at next year’s 95th annual Oscars.
Some Fun Facts About 2022’s Academy Award Nominees
This year’s nominees prove that streaming services are a force to be reckoned with in the film industry, with Netflix originals leading the competition by far. The streaming service has nominations in over a dozen categories, including Best Direction, where they are the only streaming service that received a nomination. The Netflix original drama The Power of The Dog has the highest nominations this year, with a total of 12. Netflix is even finding success in the foreign film industry; Italy’s The Hand Of God received a nomination for Best International Film.

Speaking of international films, the Japanese drama Drive My Car is doing big things this year. Drive My Car is the only foreign film nominated in 4 categories: Best International Film, Best Directing, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Disney dominates the Best Animated Feature Film category, with Encanto, Luca, and Raya and The Last Dragon all receiving nods. It appears Disney is used to winning big at the Oscars; according to the Academy, Disney holds the record for most wins and nominations in Oscar history with a total of 22 wins and 59 nominations. Although this year’s nominees are full of previous Oscar winners ( Oscar winners Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Javier Bardem, and J.K. Simmons have all been nominated), the internet has been rooting for first time Oscar nominees Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Aunjanue Ellis, and Ariana Debose who is also in the running for her first BAFTA award for her performance in West Side Story.
