Last night’s (September 11) episode of House of the Dragon, King of the Narrow Sea, was filled with sex, including with Alicent Hightower star Emily Carey who had to perform a sex scene with Paddy Considine, who plays King Viserys. In an interview with Newsweek, she revealed how “scared” she was of performing such scenes due to the violence and intensity.
When Emily Carey started House of the Dragon, she was 17. The first thing she read from the scripts was a bating and sex scene with Considine that happened in King of the Narrow Sea. Since she and her co-star had not met, she was “concerned.”
“But, it scared me, because at that point I still hadn’t met Paddy, I didn’t know how much of a joy he was and how easy he was going to make [the scene], and all I saw was, you know, a 47-year-old man, and me, I was a bit concerned.”
House of the Dragon star Emily Carey was “scared” of the show’s sex scenes
When House of the Dragon cast star Emily Carey, she was 17. When the Game of Thrones prequel started shooting, it was not long until she was 18. Still, it was intense and needed preparations. Like her co-star, Milly Alcock, who plays young Rhaenyra, the original series came out when she was far too young to watch it. Now that she was older and going into the fantasy world, she started watching it. A criticism of the original series was its sexual violence toward women, which is seen right away from its first few episodes.
“There’s a lot of violent sex and it made me nervous. I was like, ‘Oh God, what am I gonna have to do in this show?'”
For scenes like this, an intimacy coordinator is there to ensure everyone is comfortable and safe. The position has become a talking point for women in the film industry since Game of Thrones star Sean Bean has spoken against the idea. For House of the Dragon star Emily Carey, she said how “amazing” the show’s intimacy coordinator was, who helped her through these intimate and often sexual scenes.
