In real life, staying hydrated and making sure you have enough water is important, which is why it’s absolutely crucial to build a well in Dwarf Fortress. If you don’t keep your little dwarves full of food and water, how else would they have the energy to do all of the hard work they are tasked to? Of course, filling up on Ale is an option, but the more your fortress grows, the more dwarves you will have, and the faster your resources will dwindle. One of the best alternatives and solutions to this is to simply build a well. Keep reading to learn how to build a well in Dwarf Fortress.
Dwarf Fortress: How to Build a Well
If you visit the Build Menu, you should be able to see a tab titled “Machines/Fluids.” Now, keep in mind that construction required refined resources, so you’ll have to do a bit of work rather than just clicking on a well to build it. To create a well in Dwarf Fortress, you will need:
- One Bucket
- One Chain or One Rope
- One Block
- One Mechanism
In order to collect all of the following materials in the easiest way possible, follow the steps below:
- Craft a Bucket at the Carpenter’s Workshop
- Craft a Block at the Carpenter’s Workshop
- Head over to the Metalsmith’s Forge and craft a chain unless you’ve got a spare Rope lying around.
- For the Mechanism, you have the option to use any Mechanism that is listed at the bottom of the list of items to build at the Metalsmith’s Forge. If you cannot do this, you can also make a Stone Mechanism at the Mechanic’s Workshop.
Once you’ve collected all four parts of your well in Dwarf Fortress, you’ll be ready to assemble it. Your well will have to be placed in an open space above the water, no matter what the elevation is. However, you will want to place your well above a source of running water like a river. Stagnant water can cause your dwarves to fall ill, and that’s never a good thing. Keeping your dwarves strong and healthy is important!
