Dwarf Fortress is a very huge and complex game, and it is not unusual to see players getting overwhelmed by how many stuff, items, and scenarios can be found and happen organically in the game. Some of you might have trouble acquiring a rather essential crafting material called Pig Iron. Do not start butchering your Pigs for them, though; here is the proper way to get Pig Iron in Dwarf Fortress.
How to Get Pig Iron in Dwarf Fortress
Although it has a “Pig” in its name, Pig Iron is a type of Fire-safe and Magma-safe iron material that can be made from a Smelter. To craft a Pig Iron bar in a Smelter, you will need the following:
- Dwarf with a Furnace Operator labor task in the Smelter
- Iron Bar x1
- Flux Stone x1
- Calcite
- Chalk
- Dolomite
- Limestone
- Marble
- Has to be Stone, not a Block
- Fuel unit +1
- Coke or Charcoal
- Wood does not work
Using additional +1 Fuel is necessary even when using a Magma Smelter. Because the Fuel itself is part of the reaction for making Pig Iron. With that in mind, you would need two Fuel units for a normal Smelter; one for the Pig Iron making process and one to fuel the Smelter.
Pig Iron does not have many uses. Nevertheless, it is used as a component to manufacture the more important material, Steel. Pig Iron can also be used for Buildings and other Constructions that allow any kind of Bars. It can be studded to other objects when ordered by a Manager. Dwarves occasionally have a preference for Pig Iron and are more content living in a room with Pig Iron walls and floors, and sometimes you would need a spare for when your dwarves start having Strange Mood.
