HM, special moves like Flash and Strength that can be used outside of battles, have always been a vital part of exploration in all Pokemon games; however, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet made a radical change along with its open-world system. Gone is the HM system, and instead, it is replaced with the open-world abilities of the game’s Legendary Pokemon, Koraidon and/or Miraidon. So, now there’s no more Strength, what can you use to replace it in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?
What Replaces Strength HM in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet?
In older Pokemon games, Strength HM is used to destroy rocks and boulders that block your path. Truth be told, both Koraidon and Miraidon don’t have similar abilities. Koraidon or Miraidon’s Wall Climb ability, which enables them to latch onto and scale vertical surfaces, is the closest thing to Strength in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which allows you to get around obstacles. After you have obtained the ability, simply jump onto a vertical surface and hold the B button. Then you can use the left joystick to easily walk on the surface, letting you access new locations or create shortcuts throughout Paldea.
Although you obtain the Legendary Pokemon rather early in the game, the same cannot be said with their overworld abilities. Unfortunately, Koraidon or Miraidon’s five unique overworld abilities — Dash, Jump, Glide, Swim, and Wall Climb — have to be unlocked first. To unlock the Wall Climb ability, you have to obtain the Spicy Herba Mystica item by beating all the Titans together with Arven. Here’s the list of all five Titan Dens you will encounter in the Path of Legend route:
- Stony Cliff Titan: Level 16 | Sweet Herba Mystica
- Open Sky Titan: Level 19 | Bitter Herba Mystica
- Lurking Steel Titan: Level 28 | Salty Herba Mystica
- Quaking Earth Titan: Level 44 | Sour Herba Mystica
- False Dragon Titan: Level 55 | Spicy Herba Mystica
Arven will create a Sandwich for Koraidon or Miraidon with each Herba Mystica, restoring each of their individual abilities to use Dash, Jump, Glide, Swim, and Wall Climb. As you can see though, Wall Climb is the last of Koraidon or Miraidon’s five overworld abilities. Nevertheless, if you focus on the Path of Legends route, you should be to unlock Wall Climb around the mid-game part of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
