As eager fans await the release of the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, some are diving back into the game or even playing for the first time. No matter the case, perhaps you have yet to complete Link’s classic arsenal. The only way you can do that is if you find the Hylian Shield. We’ll show you where to look for the Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild and just how well it can protect you in battle.
How to Get the Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild
Running around the incredible open world just doesn’t feel complete without the legendary Hylian Shield on Link’s back. This is especially true if you already have the Master Sword in hand. Thankfully, there is a way for you to resolve this matter. It just might take you some time and some dangerous hoops to jump through.
The Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild resides in Hyrule Castle. More specifically, in the dungeon.
You can enter Hyrule Castle in several ways, so any route you take will eventually bring you to your goal. However, the castle is complex. So, it’s best to find the quickest route possible. That route is one that will get you to Lockup as soon as possible.
Lockup is on the western side of the castle. There’s an entrance next to a moat by the southwest pillar. Once you go through it, hop into a minecart and apply Stasis to get it moving. Ride the cart until you can’t go any further. At the end of the tracks, you want to go up the path near the hot spring pool.

Now, you’re one step closer to the Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild.
Keep walking until you find a dead end as well as a breakable wall. Once you clear the wall, head through and make two lefts and a right. You’ll know you’ve reached Lockup as the word will display on the screen. If not, you may have to retrace your steps.
You want to continue onward until you reach a cell. Shoot the eye through the gap in the cell bars. Once you do, all the cell doors open, so the area will flood with enemies.
Now, you can battle them or avoid them. Either way, you want to head left from the cell you were in. At the end of the hall, turn right into a cell filled with bones.
From here, you must battle the skeleton Stalnox to get the Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild. If you’ve battled one before, then you know to focus on the eye until it pops out. Attack the eye when it’s out, and attack Stalnox when it covers its face and falls back.
When you defeat Stalnox, a treasure chest will appear in the room. Open it to claim the legendary Hylian Shield. It comes with 800 durability and 90 defense.
How to Replace the Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild
The Hylian Shield is not unbreakable in Breath of the Wild. It will take a lot of damage for that to happen, though, especially laser damage. So, you can go through plenty of battles with it. Still, when it does fall apart, you can get another one.
To get another one, you must have completed the sidequest “From the Ground Up.” It is in this quest that you help build Tarrey Town in the Akkala Region. Once that quest is done, a merchant will show up there named Granté. He will sell the Hylian Shield to you for 3,000 Rupees.
Of course, this only happens if you have found the Hylian Shield. And you won’t see it in his shop unless yours breaks since you can only ever own one Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild.
