Warner Bros. has officially announced that the development of I Am Legend sequel, a follow-up to the 2007 action-thriller, is underway, set to star both original lead actor Will Smith and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan. This will mark their first movie together as stars and producers. The details of the plot have not been revealed at this time.
Oscar-winner Akiva Goldsman, who adapted the original Richard Matheson 1954 novel the first film was based on, is also returning to pen the follow-up and producer as well. I Am Legend starred Will Smith as a scientist, Dr. Robert Neville, and one of the last surviving humans in a nearly deserted post-apocalyptic New York City amidst mutated zombies. The only man on Earth immune to the virus that has infected most f the rest of humanity. Dr. Neville hs made it his mission to develop a cure for the virus using his own immune blood. The film opened to $77.2M in early December at the domestic box office and went on to gross $256.4M statewide and $585.4M worldwide.
Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo are producing via their Outlier Society banner, with Smith and Westbrook Studios Co-President, Head of Motion Pictures, Jon Mone to produce. The project will be overseen by  Ryan Shimazaki on behalf of Westbrook Studios, with James Lassiter serving as executive producer. Goldsman and Greg Lessans will also produce via Weed Road Pictures.
Although talks of I Am Legend 2 have been brought up a few times since 2008, the door for the sequel appeared to close in 2014. It was announced that Warner Bros. was working on a reboot of Richard Matheson’s novel. Movement on a new I Am Legend movie went quiet, but Warner Bros. recently announced a new entry in the franchise, though it was unclear at the time this would be a reboot or a sequel.
