Camp and comedy are no stranger to the 51 year old BBC Sci-fi drama, Doctor Who. The show has enjoyed its fair share of silly serials and episodes over the years, and several comedians have written episodes for the show during its history.
Armando Iannucci has expressed an interest in writing an episode of Doctor Who while current lead-actor, Peter Capaldi, is still performing in the role. Iannucci and Capaldi have worked together in the past with the British comedy smash hit, “The Thick of It.” With the help of Iannucci, Capaldi came to popular acclaim as the foul mouthed F-bomb dropping Malcolm Tucker in the series which ran for four seasons. When the show ceased to continue after 2012, Capaldi went on to star in a few other projects before being cast as the 12th Doctor in the time traveling marvel of Doctor Who.
Having spoken to current show runner Steven Moffat, Iannucci has said,”I’m a big fan of Doctor Who and obviously with Peter, who’s loving it, it would be nice to. I’ve spoken off and on to them but it’s a case of being able to fit something in. It’s a nice thought.”
During Season 8 of Doctor Who, writers slipped in hints of Capaldi’s former role as Malcolm Tucker when slight suggestions of the Doctor’s short temper and questionable language came in to play. Especially during “The Mummy on the Orient Express.”
Although nothing is etched in stone yet, the great possibility of Capaldi and Iannucci reuniting for a short run on Doctor Who is wide open.
