Yes, Star Wars fans rejoice. The sequel to 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront will receive a single player campaign. However don’t fret, this isn’t a tacked on the component to a multiplayer focused title. Walt Williams is leading the charge on this narrative endeavor. You may know him as the lead writer of Spec Ops: The Line, a game critically acclaimed for its challenging and disturbing story. This particular story will span the 30-year revenge story of elite Imperial Commander Iden Versio. The game begins as she witnesses the destruction of the second Death Star and continues on all the way up to the events of The Force Awakens.
Williams and developer EA Motive are working towards creating a face for the Empire. Not the face of their leaders, Vader and Sidious, but the face of one of the many soldiers of the Empire. An individual who believes in the Empire, their ways and that the rebels are the true force of tyranny within the universe. The majority of the campaign will be played through the eyes of Versio, but EA Motive has also stated that players will get a chance to play as familiar characters such as Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren over the course of the campaign.

Iden Versio herself is an already, very fleshed out character. She is the leader of a specialized team of Imperial troopers known as, “Inferno Squadron.” She also grew up on Vardon, a planet new to the Star Wars universe, and viewed by its people as an Imperial utopia. A planet designed to look like a mix between a clinical hospital and an example of Japanese architecture. It seems Motive have put a lot of thought into Versio’s back story, but will they do justice to fans by crafting a compelling narrative. Will it be a tale that humanizes the Empire or will it be a generic story that cements them as the bad guys of the universe? Let’s hope it’s the former since this tale will be canon within the expanded universe of the series.
However, with the massive budgets of EA, the exceptional talent behind the project and the lessons learned from 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront, all signs are pointing to a riveting Star Wars story.
