Rumours have resurfaced on the web, hinting that Idris Elba may succeed Daniel Craig as the new James Bond.
In a recent interview with Director Antoine Fuqua, the Daily Star revealed that the 52-year-old filmmaker is seriously considering Elba as a future Bond.
He revealed that Barbara Brocoli, the American film producer mostly known for the James Bond series, feels “it is time” for a black actor to take on the coveted role. She is certain “it will happen eventually”.
Fuqua was positive that Elba would be a good choice for the role, commenting that “[he] could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence and Idris has that.”
Of course, Elba is merely one of several rumoured choices for the part of 007. Other possible choices have been Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill and Tom Hardy, all of which are charismatic, big-time British actors like Elba. However, the desire for an ethnic minority to play the role means credences increase towards him above the other contenders.
Since he was rumoured for the role in 2014, Elba has continually said it was a rumour and that the studios have not contacted him in relation to the role.
In a 2016 interview with Good Morning America, Elba expressed doubt that he would be able to pull off the role, stating that he was “too old”. However, in a couple of other interviews including one he did for Britain’s This Morning, the 45-year-old actor expressed enthusiasm for the idea.
For now though, Daniel Craig is still wearing the tuxedo. We will see him in the upcoming currently-untitled Bond movie due for release 8th November 2019.
The 50-year-old British actor has played the iconic super-spy since 2006 with Casino Royale. He took on the role after Pierce Brosnan decided to leave the series after 2002’s Die Another Day.
