Iman and David Bowie remained together until Bowie’s death. Iman launches a new perfume brand, Love Memoir, to celebrate this relationship. Her love for Bowie may be true, but her strategy to sell a product is excellent. Iman is coming out with a new perfume Love Memoir. For Iman, Love Memoir is more than a perfume, it’s a souvenir of love. But is it really? Or is it just a brand strategy? A way to promote her product? Who knows……
Iman and David Bowie met in Los Angeles. Bowie was an extremely creative and intelligent artist. He produced Ziggy and Space Oddity. Iman created waves in the fashion industry. She was from Somalia and could speak 5 languages. Both were gifted and both were in love.
“David said it was love at first sight,” Iman tells People. “It took me a few months but I got there.”
Iman and David Bowie married in 1992 in Florence. They were the couple that others compared themselves with. Iman and David Bowie later lived in New York City. They had a daughter, Alexandria, and David loved walking her from school to home. “I knew him as the man, David Jones, his real name, snd not the rock star,” Iman says about Bowie’s real identity. The scent is a tribute to the couple’s love. From vetiver, which the model claims he wore the day they met, to bergamot and blackberry, which harken back to their wedding in the Tuscan countryside. Rose notes were also added as a homage to the famed musician’s British ancestry.
The two were an almost perfect couple for the world. “If David was not in my life, I don’t know if I would have had the courage to start Iman Cosmetics [in 1994]” she says. “I asked him ‘What if it fails?’ and he said, ‘If you don’t try, you’ll never know if it succeeds.’ He was very proud that it was one of the first lines to be very inclusive. Very chuffed, as he would say. Pleasantly happy.” says Iman.
David wasn’t narrow-minded and was really a cherished soul when it came to inclusivity. “David was very aware of racial inequality,” says Iman. “There is a famous video of him on MTV asking why they’re not hiring or showcasing Black musicians. He was very enlightened.”
Iman gave Bowie the love he deserved. “I think David was able to open up more because, with us, he felt safe,” she says. “And I think his fans saw that he laughed and smiled more.” It was a feeling they shared. With him, she says, “I felt cherished. Cherished and safe.”
So, in a way, Iman and David Bowie were in fact a perfect couple. And everybody believed so, but recently people have started using celebrity faces as baits to promote a product. Iman herself is a well-known face, and Bowie is a giant. These can make a lot of money from anything, and maybe that is what Iman expects.
