Disney and Lucasfilms have released the first trailer for Indiana Jones 5, officially named Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The new trailer and first-look photos for the film give expectant fans their first look at the de-aged Harrison Ford in what will be his last outing as the legendary Dr. Jones.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will feature Harrison Ford as a retired Indiana Jones who, two decades past the heyday of his daring car chases and the days of fighting Nazis, has decided to stick to teaching but gets pulled back in by the siren’s call of adventure for one last ride. The first trailer for the film gives a de-aged Harrison Ford as Indy in his prime, running alongside speeding trains and jumping between speeding tuk-tuk cars in a desert marketplace.
“Those days have come and gone,” an older Indy says, to which Sallah – played by returning John Rhys-Davies – replies, “Perhaps. Perhaps not.”
The trailer also gives audiences a first look at a new pair of villains played by Mads Mikkelsen and Antonio Banderas, as well as Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Helen, Indy’s goddaughter who John Williams has described as “an adventuress, and also a femme fatale,” per Variety. A rendition of Williams’ iconic Indiana Jones theme plays over scenes of Indy picking up his fedora, dodging a train on horseback, and bullwhipping some henchmen in classic Indy style.
“I don’t believe in magic,” Ford narrates over shots of him exploring dusty tombs and ancient temples. “But a few times in my life, I’ve seen things. Things I can’t explain. And I’ve come to believe it’s not so much what you believe, it’s how hard you believe it.”
Harrison Ford Will Return in Indiana Jones 5 – One Last Time
Regarding his return to the Indiana Jones franchise, Harrison Ford applauded the film and his co-stars during a for-the-room-only trailer presentation at D23 in Anaheim, according to Deadline.
“I’m very proud to say that this one is fantastic, and this is one of the reasons,” he said, referring to Phoebe Waller-Bridge. “Indiana Jones movies are about mystery and adventure, but they’re also about heart, and I’m really, really happy that we have a really human story to tell, as well as a movie that will kick [your] a**.”
Ford, 80, has also been very clear that this will be his last outing as Indiana Jones, telling audiences, “This is it. I will not fall down for you again.” John Williams, 90, shares his sentiment, stating that the film will be his last, but “if Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
In a departure from previous Indiana Jones films, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was not written by George Lucas, who was responsible for all of the previous films, and Steven Spielberg did not direct the new film – James Mangold (Logan, Ford vs. Ferrari) acted as the writer and director for Indiana Jones 5 instead, though Variety reports that Spielberg has remained as a producer, and Lucas is credited with some involvement in the writing of the film.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, aka Indiana Jones 5, starring Harrison Ford, is currently slated for a theatrical release on June 30th, 2023. Are you excited to see Indiana Jones return to the silver screen? Let us know in the comments!
