Indiana Jones 5 release date has been confirmed for 2022, with Harrison Ford reprising his role for the last time.
The fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise is set to begin production soon, and Ford will appear as the iconic archaeologist, donning his fedora one last time. During the Disney Investor Day, the company had announced that filming would begin next spring, but pre-production is already in progress.
Putting to rest the fears that Ford would not return in his role as the famed adventurer though he was confirmed to be part of the film in 2016 then pushed back to 2021, a tweet announced:
“Lucasfilm is in pre-production on the next installment of Indiana Jones. At the helm is James Mangold, director of Ford v Ferrari, and Indy himself, Harrison Ford, will be back to continue his iconic character’s journey. Adventure arrives in July 2022.”
Ford was last seen in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Still, the added delay and Ford moving on to pursue other projects gave rise to theories he wouldn’t be returning with speculations even suggesting that Chris Pratt would be taking over the role and legacy. But the 78-year-old actor maintained that whenever the character gets a new story, he’d be ready to continue the adventure.
Speaking in a 2016 interview with Jimmy Kimmel, he had said:
“ The opportunity to work Steven Spielberg again and the chance to revisit this character which has brought pleasure to so many people – not to mention, me. It’s great fun to play this character. It’s great fun to work with Steven. I’m looking forward to it.”
However, the film is will be directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker James Mangold instead of Steven Spielberg, who directed the first four films. Spielberg will instead be on board as executive producer alongside Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall as producers.
Barring any further delays, Indy’s journey begins for the fifth time in 2022, hit screens in July.
