The events of Avengers: Infinity War turned the entire MCU on its head, all with the snap of a finger. The ending has left so many questions for the future. But one of the less pressing ones has recently been answered, sort of. Where did Thanos teleport to at the end of the movie?
In a recent interview with Cnet, Kelly Port, visual effects supervisor for the company that worked on Infinity War (Digital Domain), revealed that the Mad Titan ended up in a mysterious realm known as “The Waystation” after the snap.
“It’s not a physical place, it’s not a memory, even. I think we want to keep it kind of open to interpretation. I think the meat of it is Thanos in his mind connecting with his daughter,” Port continued.” It just seems like an internal moment of reflection. It’s this really nice dramatic pause at basically the culmination of 10 years of storytelling, right? It’s this moment where he can just have this moment to internally reflect on what he’s done and the cost of that decision.”
Port does state that while Marvel hasn’t outright told them as much, that he believes this interpretation because of the work his team put into building not only that realm, through visual effects, but the work they did on Thanos as well. This could explain why he saw the child version of Gamora at the end, but still leaves a lot unanswered.
When it comes to the actual final shot of the film, which features Thanos watching the sunrise over a farm, the planet he is located on is still a mystery.
One thing we do know for certain, as the credits dictated, is that Thanos will return in Avengers 4, which releases May 3, 2019.
