It has been half a decade since the odd, often grotesque, humor of Invader Zim has graced our television screens. However, fans of the series at San Diego ComicCon were the first to see a teaser trailer for Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus!, a 90-minute special set to air on Nickelodeon.
Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus! reunites fans with all of their favorites from the original series. The darkly humorous cartoon focus on alien Zim, who is failing horribly at planning an earthly invasion, and his adorable robot companion, Gir. His mortal enemy, Dib, a beyond paranoid classmate, and his sister, Gaz, will also play a big role in the film.
The synopsis is as follows:
ZIM discovers his almighty leaders have no intention of coming to Earth and he loses confidence in his own amazingness for the first time in his amazing life – which happens to be the big break his human nemesis, Dib, has been waiting for!
Even though the trailer runs for about three minutes, it still doesn’t give us much insight into what to expect. There’s no dialogue attached to the teaser trailer, but there’s plenty of quick scenes to ponder. Gaz appears in a cleverly-named Gazmat suit; Zim seems to speak with his leaders, The Tallest; Zim’s robot parents get broken down; Dib seems to fluctuate between his regular self and a much….crustier version.
Sadly, a release date has yet to be announced, but Invader Zim creator Jhonen Vasquez wants to warn fans about high expectations. In an interview with Polygon, Vasquez seems to be fully aware that he is fighting against some strong nostalgia about the cartoon series and openly admits that Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus! won’t be any better than a normal episode, “No matter that I’ve changed and want to show the world, ‘Look at what I can do now,’ you can’t bring that to Zim, because Zim is about not growing or learning any lessons no matter how many horrible things you do.”
