As titles go, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (helpfully shortened to Danmashi from its original Japanese title “Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka“) is one of anime’s more nonsensical, and even then, it doesn’t fully get to the heart of what this show is all about. Clearly, it has received enough love from the anime faithful to be renewed for its fourth season, as confirmed with a trailer by Warner Bros Japan, and the staff at JC Studios, who have also worked on animes such as Eden’s Zero, Golden Time, and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou to name a few.
They announced that the fourth season of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? will air in Japan in 2022, although they didn’t dish out any details for Western fans. Given the popularity of the series – Danmashi’s first season features on over 1 million user lists on popular anime ranking site MyAnimeList with an average score of 7.64 – it’s bound to find its way over to the West in some shape or form. That will likely come under Sony’s umbrella, made even more likely with the news that Sony’s Funimation division acquired Crunchyroll for nearly $2 billion.
For those who hadn’t previously heard of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? it centers on Bell Cranel, an adventurer in the city of Orario who aims to become the very best, like no one ever was… wait, hang on – anyway, his quest to be the greatest adventurer takes him to the catacombs of the city, known as the Dungeon. It’s a perilous endeavor, with monsters lurking around every corner, making the anime’s title seem secondary to simply just surviving. The third season of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? premiered last September, and has maintained the standards set by the previous two seasons, with a 7.57 on MAL. Hopefully, the fourth season continues that trend.
