J.J. Abram’s Justice League Dark Planned For HBO Max

J.J. Abrams has crafted top-tier stories throughout his career, and it appears his next project is The Justice League. Specifically, Justice League Dark.

It seems the ink from Abrams deal with Warner Bros. is finally dry, and the time to work has come. The agreement, as mentioned above, tied Warner Bros. and Abrams’ production team, Bad Robot, together earlier this year. The deal has presented the A-list director a plethora of available franchises. The partnership came as a bit of a shock given that Warner Bros.’ proposal was less than Apple’s. WarnerMedia’s proposal was reportedly half of Apple’s record-breaking $500 million offer.

Warner Brothers’ depth chart (DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, Mortal Kombat, etc.) was too impressive for Abrams and his producing partner, wife Katie McGrath, to pass up. With a stacked lineup of opportunities and a dynamic platform in HBO Max, via a new distribution deal between WarnerMedia and Charter, it appears that Abrams and his team are ready to rock.

S.S. Abrams: First Stop… The DC Universe

Saying that the DC Extended Universe has underwhelmed is an understatement. That’s not to say there haven’t been a few bright spots. Shazam! was a fun ride, and Wonder Woman was a pretty kick-ass origin story. But, the other installments have fallen flat, and the universe’s repeated efforts to reinvent the wheel have failed to captivate audiences—especially when compared to (YES, it has to be compared to it) the MCU.

All this aside, there appears to be a bright spot on the horizon for DC fans. Abrams’ newest project will be a television series rather than a feature film. J.J. Abrams’ success in television is legendary. With a portfolio consisting of Lost and Westworld, it seems that fan-favorite Justice League Dark will be in responsible hands.

The Justice League spin-off series may sound familiar. Many attempts to adapt the series have come and gone. Most notably, Guillermo del Toro’s has pushed hard for the project. Sadly, with Abrams’ rendition gearing up for production, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see del Toro’s screenplay come to life. It’s a shame. However, I fully expect Abrams to produce exceptional versions of Deadman, John Constantine, Swamp Thing, and Zatanna.

Justice League Dark first, Shining spin-off next

Justice League Dark primarily shines its spotlight on several of DC’s more supernatural characters. Oddly enough, the supernatural theme will be joining Abrams for another project. On top of Justice League Dark, HBO Max and Abrams are also set to develop a spin-off series based on The Shining.

Called Overlook, the new spin-off will take place in the same universe as Stephen King’s bestseller. Little is known about the project. It’s unclear if the project will pull more from King’s novel or Kubrick’s 1980 film adaptation. Either way, a return to The Shining’s universe with J.J. Abrams at the helm is delightfully intriguing.
