Fans will have two trips available to go back to Pandora as James Cameron prepares for the 4K re-release of Avatar and the December release of its long-awaited sequel, The Way of Water. In a video posted on his Twitter with over 55,000 views, the director welcomes fans back and gets them ready to experience the 2009 Oscar-winning film “the way it was meant to be seen.”
As the highest-grossing film ever with $2.8 billion, the release of Avatar could top the record James Cameron is already holding. The film, which hits theaters again this weekend (September 23), will be in 4K, high dynamic range, and 9.1 sound to give it that boost after it has aged for 13 years.
“Ever since I was a kid going to the movies, there was nothing like the cinema experience,” he said. “When we made Avatar, we set out to push the limits of that experience.”

After breaking ground in 2009 with its usage of 3D and special effects, which led to global domination, James Cameron is finally getting the ball rolling on the Avatar sequels. The second film will release on December 16, when fans will get to return to Pandora, and the world will see if it can reach the high bar set by its predecessor. It will star Zoe Saldaña, Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Jermaine Clement, and more.
James Cameron has an ambitious vision for Avatar. As five films have been planned for over a decade, we will be getting the third on December 22, 2023; the fourth on December 19, 2025; and the final installment on December 17, 2027. With titans like the first film, Marvel movies like Endgame and Infinity War, and The Force Awakens, the top-charting box office hits will be on a battlefield.
