For video game movies, creating a film that remains accurate to the game itself can be difficult. With more and more adaptations on the way, gamers just want an experience that remains consistent with what they played. This applies to the upcoming Borderlands movie as well. Luckily, Borderlands star Janina Gavankar suggests that the filmmaking crew is taking accuracy very seriously.
In a recent interview on Collider Ladies Night with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, Gavankar stated that “they really mean it” when it comes to keeping the movie accurate to the Borderlands games.
“The production design and the art direction alone is so close to the game,” Gavankar said. “You can’t believe they put this much love and attention into the details. I came in with my arms crossed like, ‘You better do it right because I’m here to call bullsh*t.’ And it’s like, they went hard. They really meant it. Even down to our costumes, just getting the colors of everything right. There’s a lot of love that went into the production.”
Janina Gavankar has plenty of experience in the gaming industry outside of Borderlands. While she has done some voice acting along with motion capture in games like Star Wars Battlefront II and Forspoken, she also has experience directing games as well. “I’ve been a hardcore gamer since 2007,” Gavankar added. “I started gaming super late. At this point, I also consult and direct in the games space as well, so it’s a really big part of my life.”
There have already been some images shared that showcase silhouettes of the cast and they appear to look like their video game counterparts. The Borderlands games have a very distinct artistic style and look. The game is set in a barbaric wasteland where players shoot and loot their way through a series of insane enemies.
The Borderlands movie is directed by Eli Roth and in addition to Gavankar, stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, and Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap. There is no official release date for the Borderlands movie, but it could be coming out sometime in 2022.
