A Japanese trailer for The Batman has been released featuring more teasers of what to look forward to when the film is released in 2022. Perhaps the most significant teaser is that the Riddler (Paul Dano) knows that Batman is Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson).
At the end of this trailer, we see Bruce Wayne removing his mask while we hear Edward Nashton (a.k.a. The Riddler) utter the words “I’ve been trying to reach you, Bruce Wayne” followed by a sinister laugh. This follows the Riddler stating his quest to “unmask the truth about this city” referring to Gotham. This take on the Riddler is looking to be a truly creepy and disturbing one in contrast to the goofy and over-the-top portrayals we saw with Jim Carrey (Batman Forever) and Frank Gorshin (the 1960’s Batman series). This makes sense since this Riddler is being compared to Jigsaw from the Saw franchise.
The Batman will feature a young Bruce Wayne in his second year as the dark knight. Pattinson explained at DC FanDome in October that this version of Bruce Wayne still doesn’t have “much control over his personality. Like, the delineation between when he’s Batman and when he’s Bruce, it’s not so clear.” Elements of that unhinged nature have been evident in every trailer we’ve seen so far. For example, there is a scene where Batman is beating down clown thugs, seeming to just stop short of delivering a killing blow. This mental instability seems to be of concern for both Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz) and Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), the latter of whom warns Bruce that his behavior may leave him with “nothing left.”
The Batman will be released on March 4, 2022. What do you think of this new Japanese trailer for The Batman? Are you looking forward to Paul Dano’s new creepy take on the Riddler? What else from the trailer caught your interest? Tell us in the comment section.
