The remake of The Crow seems as cursed as its namesake character – directors and actors have come and gone from the project, which has been in development for years. The film has had Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, Jack Houston, and, most recently, Jason Momoa attached in the starring role of Eric Draven. Go ahead and chalk up another one in the “bad luck” column: Jason Momoa has dropped out of The Crow, and director Corin Hardy has stepped away as well.
With how volatile production of the film has already been, it seems increasingly unlikely that the remake of The Crow may never happen after all.
Sony Pictures picked up the film and announced that it would be releasing in October 2019. According to Coming Soon, The Crow was scheduled to begin shooting in about five weeks, but the distribution deal with Sony never finalized. Seeing the writing on the wall, Momoa and Hardy left due to “creative and financial differences.”
It’s probably for the best. The Crow seems like such a perfect time capsule of the early and mid-90s, and the idea of making a “gritty reboot” of a film that was already pretty darn gritty raised some eyebrows. After all, The Crow is a film about a murdered men coming back to our world as a spirit of revenge in order to kill his wife’s murderer. The original film starred Brandon Lee, son of the legendary Bruce Lee, as the title character. He was tragically killed while filming a scene for the movie when a mistake with a prop gun caused it to fire a projectile at him from close range. Lee later died at the hospital at the age of 28.
Momoa probably made the right decision stepping away from this one. He could always reappear in flashbacks in the final season for Game of Thrones, and his solo Aquaman film comes out in December.
