Jason Momoa’s Role in Live-Action Action Minecraft Movie, Production and Release Details
Minecraft, first in 2011 by producer Mojang, is an open-world sandbox game that allows players to use blocks to craft different structures and worlds. The game has become a critical sensation and taken the world by storm, a sensation reaching 100 million users just a few years after launch and helping spark Microsoft to acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014. As of October 2021, the game reportedly has more than 141 million monthly active players.
Warner Bros has been developing a project based on the game for years, with the original announcement claiming the movie would release on March 4, 2022. This, of course, never happened, and no release date has been confirmed or even rumored for the live-action Minecrafty movie.
Dune producer Mary Parent and Roy Lee are set to produce the film, with Jill Messick receiving a posthumous producing credit for developing the film before her death in 2018. Executive producers include Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts.
In 2019, Minecraft developer Mojang said the movie would center on a teenage girl “and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”
Jason Momoa is soon set to star in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, due out in March 2023, likely before the release of the live-action Minecraft movie. The film is a sequel to the $1 billion-grossing 2018 film Aquaman and will follow up directly from it.
