Marvel Comics is bringing back one of their most notorious X-Men in her own mini-comic series: Jean Grey. After fans have believed her dead for almost thirteen years, Jean Grey, or Phoenix, is returning from the ashes in Phoenix Resurrection, a five-issue series. And, according to Marvel Comics, this is only the beginning.
Senior editor, Mark Paniccia, teased a major event that will leave Jean Grey with a new, “startling role”. In a press release sent out earlier this week by Marvel, a synopsis for the new Jean Grey series was announced:
Strange events are no surprise to the X-Men, but when events start occurring that are more specific and strange than usual, the group is forced to confront the truth: could Jean be alive after all? And how will this Jean Grey deal with a world that is now so different from the one she left years ago?
Phoenix Resurrection is a part of the comic giant’s new line, Marvel Legacy, which continues to bring back old favorites from Marvel’s classic lineup. The timing for Grey’s new comic is by no means an accident. 20th Century Fox and Marvel are working together on a new X-Men film that will release sometime next year. X-men: Dark Phoenix will focus on Sophie Turner’s young Jean Grey as she develops and learns about her true power. The comic series, releasing later this year, will create plenty of hype for the newest film.
Matthew Rosenberg (Secret Warriors, Punisher) will be working on the story exclusively while Leinil Yu (Secret Empire) is responsible for the stunning artwork. Fans can expect to see the first issue of Phoenix Resurrection on the shelf of your favorite comic shop on December 27th, 2017.
