DC’s Comics, The Joker, is getting an ongoing comic series for the first time in 45 years! DC Comics recently announced the upcoming project, set to hit shelves in March.
Written by veteran Batman writer James Tynion IV and artist Guillem March (Gotham City Sirens), the ongoing comic will bring Joker back to the forefront of Gotham’s crime scene. This comes after Joker’s huge 45 years out of the ongoing solo comics. His first solo comic was in 1975, which lasted only nine issues.
Aptly titled The Joker, the new project will be a 40-page monthly comic. Slated as an ongoing horror noir story, it will also explore GCDP Commissioner Jim Gordon. Additionally, as well as more Joker antics, it will include a backup story for Punchline. The Punchline story will come from co-writer Tynion, Sam Johns, and artist Mirka Andolfo.
What's The Joker's next move? His own ongoing series.

In the announcement, DC offered a short synopsis of the comic in their press release. Check it out below:
“After an unthinkable attack on Gotham City, the Clown Prince of Crime has become the most wanted man in the world! The Joker is doing his best to stay several steps ahead of law enforcement overseas, but Jim Gordon, facing retirement, realizes this is the last manhunt of his life and vows to track down Gotham’s worst nemesis, completing his storied career. But there are some mysterious and deadly forces that are also on the hunt for The Joker, and they’re not going to let Gordon slow them down or get in the way.”
Furthermore, writer James Tynion IV has shared his excitement for his new 2021 project. “When I was approached by DC about the concept of an ongoing series spotlighting The Joker, I thought, ‘What would that book even look like?'” Tynion said in a statement. He adds that he is also “thrilled to continue working with Sam and Mirka to expand the Punchline story we began in November as a back-up feature in this new ongoing Joker series.”
It’s definitely the right time to bring a monthly Joker comic back. The character has been in the spotlight recently, especially with the commercial success of Joker (2019).
For the first time in 45 years, a new ongoing Joker comic will hit stores on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. These are clearly exciting times!
