The new issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El will take Jon Kent’s journey in a new direction. On November 9, issue #5 will feature Jon Kent kissing his friend Jay in something new for the character.
Jon Kent Comes Out as Bisexual in Superman: Son of Kal-El
In Superman: Son of Kal-El, Jon Kent takes up the Superman mantle after his father travels off-world. The series focuses on a newer version of Jon Kent as he upholds his superhero standards and dignity. For the upcoming issue, which is set to debut on November 9, Jon Kent will share a kiss with Jay.
The series is being written by Tom Taylor with art by John Timms. Taylor commented on the nature of Jon Kent’s bisexual nature, saying:
I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes, and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea. Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”
The effort to make comic books more LGBTQ has been ongoing for quite some time now. Months ago, it was revealed that Tim Drake is bisexual in the Batman: Urban Legends run. As new canons and revisions enter the multiverse of DC Comics, we’re bound to see more characters come out with their true sexual preferences. DC chief creative officer and Publisher Jim Lee spoke about the comics’ evolution by saying:
We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling…We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family on TV on Superman & Lois. They coexist in their own worlds and times, and our fans get to enjoy both simultaneously.”
