Director Chris McKay (most known for the well-received The Lego Batman Movie) has been pinned to helm the upcoming Jonny Quest film. The movie was originally supposed to be directed by Robert Rodriguez, but the script he helped co-write will still be used for the final product. Early plot details via IMDB suggest that it will be a faithful adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon:
Young adventurer, Jonny Quest, joins his scientist father along with his brother, Hadji, and his pet bulldog, Bandit, in extraordinary escapades around the world. A live-action feature based on the animated Hanna-Barbera series.
Although Jonny Quest aired from 1964 to 1965, the show became a staple for Saturday morning cartoons in the ’80s with the edited The New Adventures of Jonny Quest. The character also made appearances in Jonny’s Golden Quest, Jonny Quest vs. The Cyber Insects, and Cartoon Network’s The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.
A live-action version of Jonny Quest has been in the works for years now, with earlier iterations starring Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson. Warner Bros. is apparently still looking to cast the roles of Race Bannon, Quest’s secret-agent bodyguard and mentor, and Hadji, Quest’s closest friend.
McKay hit it big when The Lego Batman Movie garnered $312 million worldwide after its release, making it a smashing success. Also on the docket for the director is an upcoming Dungeons and Dragons title and Nightwing, the standalone DC film based on Dick Grayson.
Is Chris McKay the right guy to finally bring Quest to the big screen? Will fans be wowed by the beloved series’ comeback? Who do you want to see cast in the upcoming project? Let us know what you think about it in the comments.
