You never know how you will meet the love of your life. In an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Karen Gillan recalled how she met her husband through Instagram (seen below). The Guardians of the Galaxy star’s story shows that taking that big swing to slide into someone’s DMs can mean that you find your soulmate.
Karen Gillan’s husband is Nick Kocher. The writer and actor is known for Eureka!, Saturday Night Live, and The Bubble. The two got married last spring in her home country of Scotland. They kept it low-key and only revealed it when it was over. Now, she is getting deeper into how they first met. Unlike many celebrity couples, their story is a little different than most.
“I slid into his DMs on Instagram. He popped up on my recommended friends list on Instagram. The algorithm is tearing the country apart, but it brought me together with my guy,” she said, further explaining she hopped from Instagram DMs to Twitter. “So, it was on Twitter because I followed him on Instagram and then he didn’t DM me. I thought he might be like, ‘Oh, hey.’ So, then I followed him on Twitter. So, I DM’d him on Twitter saying, ‘Hi, your tweets are really funny. I’m Karen, by the way.”
Karen Gillan Recalls Meeting Her Husband on Twitter and Instagram
The layers got peeled back further. Karen Gillan did not actually read any of her eventual husband’s tweets. As co-host Kelly Ripa put it, she “appealed to his sense of humor,” giving the Guardians star some leeway on her attempted compliment. The actress joked about his comedy writing career so that complimenting a comedy writer’s tweets was a way to “make them feel very good about themselves.”
For the writer, he is currently on strike as the Writers Guild of America fights back against Hollywood executives paying low wages. His wife has publically given her support to the WGA, tweeting that “without you [writers] there would be no stories, no scripts, no characters.”
She is also currently promoting her latest film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It will be the final film for some of the characters. It will also mark the final Marvel project from writer-director James Gunn as he focuses on being the co-CEO of DC, spearheading its interconnected universe of TV shows, movies, and video games.
