After recent news that the CW’s Katy Keene wouldn’t be renewed for a second season, fans have deeply regretted the exit of their favorite show.
But, as it turns out, it isn’t just the fans that are having trouble saying goodbye to the Riverdale spin-off. In a recently-posted Instagram video, the star who played Katy herself, Lucy Hale, grieved over the loss of the program.

In the video, Hale claims that she’s made multiple takes before filming the posted version, having been emotionally affected by the show’s cancellation. Despite this, she goes on to thank the cast and crew of Katy Keene, describing the show as “the role of a lifetime”.
Hale encourages fans to watch on HBO Max, where it currently streams. In an article from Deadline, it’s mentioned that WBTV is currently pursuing a new home for the show, with HBO Max being the best bet due to their ownership of the streaming rights.
Katy Keene is the only current CW show not to be renewed this season. It had modest TV ratings, despite generally positive reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus on the series’ first season is, “Katy Keene definitely has style to spare, but its greatest strength is its warm, joyous tone that sparkles in a sea of gritty YA TV.”
Its parent series, Riverdale, is one of such example of ‘gritty YA TV‘. A ratings winner since its first season, the Archie Comics-based series is due to start its fifth season in January 2021. This follows a heavily-shortened fourth season, which didn’t get past Episode 19 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hale herself has been in a number of TV series’ that have been prematurely canceled after one season. This includes Bionic Woman (2007), Privileged (2008) and Life Sentence (2018). She found great success through the CW drama Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017) which proved popular enough to last seven seasons.
