Last time we saw David Tennant’s villainous character-known under the alias, Kilgrave-was when we heard the snap of his neck. The end of season one of Jessica Jones proved that the (sometimes drunk) good guys always prevail against evil. Although this was the case, David Tennant was spotted on the set of season two of the show. That presents the obvious question: How will Kilgrave return to the second season of Jessica Jones if he has been killed? That is a question that has yet to be answered officially.
Kilgrave could return for a short instance; possibly a flashback from Jessica’s perspective on how they first met. Or it could be that the villain’s mind simply cannot die that easily, that his power allows his psyche to live on within a host. With Jessica being in control of her own body, it would have to be more of a voice inside of her head that can’t control her; his power only works if he is physically present, as it affects a person’s will-power through pheromones. Yet there is also another possibility of his return: maybe he never died in the first place.
Presumed dead, Kilgrave would be taken to the morgue to begin the after death processes. Probably no funeral for this guy, but still…he’d be handled as any other dead body (in theory). With no one knowing the full extent of his powers, they wouldn’t for a chance assume that he could come back to life. But, according to the description of his powers on his Fandom page, “Killgrave’s body has also been mutated so that he is able to recover rapidly from trauma and to heal from severe injuries.” Uh oh, Jessica.
His powers in the comics could be different than the ones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making this theory unlikely. But that’s why it’s a theory. If the character has already made appearances on the set, then something fishy is going on. How and why Kilgrave returns, though, is still up in the air. I personally don’t think that after the critical acclaim David Tennant received for his role as Kilgrave Marvel would get rid of the character that easily. Especially since his powers allow his body to regenerate after an experience that would kill any normal person.
I’ll end with this example from his Fandom page: “…he was forced by his own children to walk into a train and kill himself outright, he recovered from this forced suicide.” Kilgrave’s power of regeneration is strong enough to live through being hit by a train. How well do you think he fared against a snapped neck? Season two of Jessica Jones holds the answer, coming to Netflix sometime in 2018. Before that, make sure to check out The Defenders, which will begin streaming on Netflix on August 18 (aka this weekend).
