As the holidays approach, we are getting ready to say so long to the fall anime season. The season was somewhat sparse, with only a handful of big hits. That said, one of the biggest anime shows of the season is Komi Can’t Communicate. After it was announced for October release through a Netflix partnership, it made its way to the top. It was one of the first shows to be a weekly Netflix release. After a successful season for a successful series, we’ve received some good news. Komi and friends have already been green-lit for season 2!
Komi’s Experience is the Perfect Relatable Comedy
Komi Can’t Communicate is a Netflix comedy anime that works surprisingly well for the concept it is based on. For those who haven’t heard of it until now, it focuses on a boy named Tadano who comes into contact with school idol Komi Shoko. The girl is beautiful, graceful, and cool. The series makes a point from the get-go that she’s the most popular girl there. Komi’s secret is that she has a communication disorder. Though everyone idolizes and wants to know her, she can’t get more than a few syllables out. Tadano’s intuition helps him figure this out in episode one, so he agrees to help her make 100 friends.
What makes Komi Can’t Communicate so charming is the combination of deadpan humor and wholesome effort that comes from Komi herself. Komi finds herself in plenty of situations where she needs to push herself. Sometimes, she can’t quite go through with it. But in the end, she makes small steps that give both her and the audience a sense of hope. By the end of the season, she’s already leaps and bounds ahead of where she was. Viewers with communication issues may find their courage thanks to Komi’s example. In a year filled with great rom-com anime shows like Horimiya and Don’t Toy With Me Nagatoro, it’s nice to see another great take the stage.
