The upcoming remake of the cult-classic Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) has had a rather unpleasant development journey. According to a new report published by Bloomberg, the Star Wars KOTOR remake, which was previously being developed by Aspyr Media, has now shifted to one of Saber Interactive’s studios in Eastern Europe.
Star Wars KOTOR Remake was announced as a PS5 console launch exclusive at Sony’s State of Play in 2021. Since then, fans have been hearing rather troublesome news regarding the project from various insiders. Bloomberg has now been able to confirm that the KOTOR remake has been taken from Aspyr Media and handed over to Saber Interactive.
Both of the studios, Aspyr and Saber Interactive are owned by the same parent company, Embracer Group AB. Recently, we also learned that the project has been delayed indefinitely by folks over at Aspyr not knowing what to do with the project. But, now it looks like Embracer has got it figured out by passing down the helm of responsibility to Saber Interactive. The parent company also confirmed this change quietly in an earnings call last week saying “one of the Group’s AAA projects has transitioned to another studio within the Group. This was done to ensure the quality bar is where we need it to be for the title.”
We didn’t know what project they were referring to until now. Another reason mentioned for the transition of the project to a new studio is the fact that neither Embracer nor the folks over at Disney or Sony were pleased by the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic remake’s progress under Aspyr Media.
How does this affect KOTOR’s release date?
The last tentative release window for Knights of the Old Republic reported by Bloomberg was sometime in 2025. As of right now, we do not know if this transition will push the game’s release date back or move it forward. However, it seems like Sony and Disney have faith in Saber Interactive which is a positive sign.
Star Wars KOTOR is planned to launch for PS5 and PC.
