It’s an understatement to say that Elizabeth Bank’s Charlie’s Angels reboot hasn’t done too well.
Being made on a $48-55 million budget, the wacky spy reboot garnered only a $56 million Box Office return.
Banks felt the movie’s lack of success reinforced the stereotype “that men don’t go see women do action movies.” Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter suggested that the film “failed to attract moviegoers over the age of 35” and “younger females—its target audience—in enough numbers.”
Now, one of the movie’s stars, Kristen Stewart, has chimed in on the Charlie’s Angel’s flop. In an interview in The Playlist, She says, regardless of its mediocre returns, she is proud of the movie.
Well, to be honest with you, I think if I had made a movie that wasn’t good and one that I wasn’t proud of and a lot of people saw it, I would be devastated. Luckily I’m not feeling gutted because I really am proud of the movie
But Stewart further commented on the political context that Charlie’s Angels had been released, describing it as “polarizing and it’s weird,” admitting ” it’s kind of hard to promote a movie like that.” She went on to describe TV press interviews as overly politicized when it came to the feminism aspect of the film when “Dude, we just wanted to have a good time.'”
And while she is “bummed” that they won’t make a sequel to the reboot, Stewart is “so happy that it exists and can live in the world” and that it remains essential for a lot of people in a “non-serious” way.
With franchises like Charlie’s Angels constantly getting rejigged and rebooted in Hollywood, some succeed, and others do not. A relatively recent example includes the 2017 Power Rangers movie, which earned $140 million on a $100 million budget (generally, films need to make twice their working budget to be considered successful). The poor reception to the movie has caused Paramount to start another reboot of the franchise.
