A classic is being reborn in high-definition as Last Action Hero comes to 4K UHD Blu-Ray.
Sony is re-releasing the 1993 action movie parody on the fabled format with a host of extra features. The release follows a 2019 poll in Paramount asked fans which older films they wanted to see in 4k.
The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Jack Slater, an in-universe fictional action hero. When teenage fanboy Danny Madigan miraculously teleports to his world via a golden ticket, action comedy hijinks ensue. It turns out that being part of the movie is a lot less fun for young Danny than watching it. The movie is directed and produced by John McTiernan, intended as a satire of 90’s action movies. Unfortunately, upon initial release, the film opened to bad Box Office returns and scathing reviews. However, the movie enjoys a cult fandom despite these facts.
And now, said fandom can enjoy a wider array of Last Action Hero features than ever before. The official press release claims the Blu-Ray contains a new audio commentary by John McTiernan, a new behind-the-scenes featurette, the film’s original teaser, deleted scenes, and an alternate ending. But that’s not all. The set also contains the music video for AC/DC’s “Big Gun” which features in the film and a fancy limited edition steelbook case. And, needless to say, the movie is completely remastered in 4K resolution with HDR10 and new Dolby Atmos audio + the original theatrical SDDS mix presented as 5.1 + original theatrical stereo audio.
In other words, there is a lot of bang here for your buck. No doubt the Last Action Hero Blu-Ray release is a surefire purchase for fans. As to whether its release can bring new fans to the fold remains to be seen. Regardless, this new Blu-Ray set hits stores on May 18, 2021.
