Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Peter Pan has found its two leads, reports Variety. Alexander Molony will play Peter, and Ever Anderson will portray Wendy. The remake, titled Peter Pan & Wendy, will be directed by David Lowery. He previously directed Disney’s live-action remake of Pete’s Dragon in 2016. Lowery is co-writing the script with Toby Halbrooks, who also helped him write Pete’s Dragon. Jim Whitaker, who has produced several live-action Disney movies like Pete’s Dragon and A Wrinkle in Time, will produce here.
This casting marks the biggest roles for both young leads. Molony has appeared in the Sky One series The Reluctant Landlord and Disney Junior’s Claude. Anderson has had a bit more coverage. As Milla Jovovich’s real-life daughter, she appeared as the younger version of her mother’s character in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. She’ll also appear as the younger Natasha Romanoff in the upcoming Black Widow.
Disney is showing no signs of slowing down when it comes to remaking their classic films in live-action. Last year, both The Lion King and Aladdin made over $1 billion at the box office. In fact, there’s already a sequel in development for the latter. There’s also Mulan releasing this month, which is garnering early positive reviews. On the streaming side, it was recently revealed that a prequel series to 2017’s Beauty and the Beast will be coming to Disney+. There were rumors that this Peter Pan adaptation would be added to the streaming service, similar to the Lady and the Tramp remake. But Variety reports this will get a theatrical release.
Based on J.M Barrie’s classic novel, Disney’s 1953 animated movie is still the most successful adaptation. The most recent version was Joe Wright’s Pan in 2015, which bombed at the box office. But with this version being Disney, it’s sure to do much better.
