The music superstar Lizzo has recently shared her viewpoint regarding cancel culture. The star wrote in a Tweet that she believes cancel culture has been “appropriated” and is now being “trendy, misused, and misdirected.” Lizzo went on to say that she hopes that people “phase out” of this. It’s defined as “the mass withdrawal of support from public figures or celebrities who have done things that aren’t socially accepted today” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Many other big names like Graham Norton, Alec Baldwin, Ricky Gervais, and Sharon Stone have spoken out on that subject. Lizzo joins one of the numerous voices on the matter of cancel culture. The “About Damn Time” singer has been under fire for everything from her word choice in lyrics to her body image. She has adapted to the criticism and her music career has been very successful.
Lizzo Doesn’t Let Trolls Hold Her Back
When Lizzo came under fire for her “GRRRLS” lyric, she changed her lyrics. When trolls kept mocking her for the way she looks, she just continued killing it with confidence. Lizzo is denouncing cancel culture for what it is today. She is however acknowledging the root of cancel culture was good. Lizzo has just acknowledged that she thinks that it has turned into something ugly. Nowadays it’s a buzzword for petty disagreements. No matter what connotation people attribute to it, the curious can reference the Merriam-Webster dictionary for its definition. Lizzo is no stranger to the mob mentality of social media. She’s also not ignorant of valid criticisms that can come out of it. Kate Hudson expressed similar views to Lizzo saying that people should be held accountable, but not call out people who don’t have a “deeper awareness”. The use and misuse of the word is an uphill battle.
Do you agree with Lizzo’s perspective on this?
