David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) always gets major stars in his films like American Hustle and Joy. He is making no exception for his next directing and writing outing with his biggest roster of A-listers. Christian Bale, Robert De Niro, Taylor Swift, Chris Rock, Michael Shannon, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe Saldaña, Rami Malek, Timothy Olyphant, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington star in Amsterdam. Joining together for the film’s premiere in New York City, the stars talked to The Hollywood Reporter about finding chemistry that came naturally during the production of the film.
The story of Amsterdam centers on John David Washington, Margot Robbie, and Christian Bale as three friends in the 1930s who witness a murder. Based on true events, the three suspects uncover the wild answers to this murder mystery. As the three leads have roles as friends, they found something together that led to them praising one another at the premiere.
“Whenever you have a really fulfilling and interesting and exciting creative experience, you do come out bonded anyway, like anyone would. So, [the chemistry] wasn’t something we really needed to work at,” Margot Robbie said about the Amsterdam cast.
While Margot Robbie found it easy on the set of Amsterdam, John David Washington found the “professionalism,” “humility,” and people’s “craving” to create made for a smooth process and created their chemistry.
“Their professionalism, their humility, and their craving; their hankering for telling the truth and getting to the source of what all the actions are, what motivates the actions, as an actor, it made it easy to just get in line, blend in and have the chemistry,” John David Washington said about his Amsterdam colleagues.

For the three leads, this is their first project together. Technically, the American Psycho and Wolf of Wallstreet stars were in the same film as he was one of the leads in The Big Short, and the Suicide Squad actress had a cameo in the film, but for everyone having significant roles, this marks their first time working side by side.
The director produces with the Dark Knight actor, Eliana Adise, Matthew Budman, Sarena Cohen, Anthony Katagas, Tracey London, Arnon Milchan, and Doug Torres. Michael Schaefer, Adel Future Nur, Yariv Milchan, Sam Hanson, and Drake executive produce. The film hits theaters on October 7.
