Marvel Studios have a whole host of projects in the works at the moment, from The Eternals to Black Widow to WandaVision – but what about Hulk?
Mark Ruffalo, who has played both Hulk and his alter-ego Bruce Banner since 2012’s The Avengers, sat down with American talk show host Stephen Colbert recently and the very question came up.
When Colbert put the question to Ruffalo, the 51-year-old actor responded by referencing the 2019 Hollywood Film Awards:
“I don’t know. I don’t know,” said the Hulk actor, “I do know that I did give Kevin Feige the Blockbuster Award at the Hollywood Film Awards the other day, to a smattering of applause. And he did say, ‘Hey, do you think there’s any more [Hulk] story left here?’ And I said, ‘I could probably come up with a few storylines.’ And he said, ‘Maybe you should come in and we’ll have a talk.’ You heard it here.”
So, in other words, it’s just pure speculation at the moment. Still, it’s heartwarming to see that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is willing to listen to Ruffalo in regards to possible Hulk storylines, despite the fact that he himself is an unadulterated genius. The respect is definitely there.
Mark Ruffalo last portrayed Bruce Banner/Hulk in the commercially-successful warhorse that was Avengers: Endgame. Although Banner started out the series as a dramatic character, he has progressively become more comedic in nature – his Thor: Ragnarok appearance and the last two Avengers films being prominent examples of this more comedic Hulk.
Unfortunately, Marvel doesn’t have the rights to distribute solo Hulk films due to a complex situation concerning Universal, who distributed the 2003 Ang Lee film and the 2008 reboot. This would mean that the character would need to be put into another character’s (or ensemble) film in order to explore future storylines as has been done with previous films.
