Morbius, the vampiric villain of Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery, is ready for his movie close-up from the eyes of Jared Leto. The living vampire, though less well-known than the Sinister Six or Venom, has a fair amount of popularity. He even has his own comic series that began in 2019. Following suit on the anti-hero antics of Venom, Marvel’s Morbius movie seems to be quickly painting the villain into a hero who just can’t control himself. Well, after multiple delays, we’ve received the next (and last) trailer for the Morbius movie starring Jared Leto.
Who is Our Fanged Friend?
Michael Morbius, like so many villains, has a tragic backstory that only becomes worse. He was born with a rare and degenerative blood disease that makes him extremely frail. As he grows older, he becomes a biochemist so he may try to find a cure for his own disease. Over time, he came up with an experiment that he believed would do the trick. It involved, you guessed it, vampire bats. Through a dangerous process involving them and some electroshocks, Morbius became a pseudo-vampire, also known as a Living Vampire. Essentially, he has vampire-like traits and a vampire appearance but isn’t quite one. The blood lust is there and he hates sunlight, but he’s not invulnerable and any other powers like hypnotism are minor at best.
Where Does Morbius Sit in the Sony-Marvel Universe?
Seeing as Morbius is technically a Spider-Man villain, he’s owned by Sony Pictures. As most fans of the web-slinger know, Spider-Man is on contract with Disney’s Marvel Studios, and therefore outside the normal Sony universe. So, where does that put the vampire here? The trailer for Marvel’s Morbius movie doesn’t give us anything conclusive. It almost makes things more confusing. Multiple easter eggs point either way throughout! Disney’s Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming has a cameo, yet Morbius himself makes a joke that he’s Venom. People with a more trained eye have also noticed background nods throughout. With the recent ending to Venom: Let There Be Carnage, it’s anybody’s guess now.
Either way, Jared Leto is set to put out a stellar performance for our pseudo-vampire. What do you think of the Morbius movie? Will you go see it? Leave a comment below!
