Marvel’s Spider-Man released to a warm welcome this week from gaming and superhero fans alike. The game is littered with references and easter eggs for fans to find. Insomniac decided to bring in a few different references to real-world happenings in their version of New York City, but one has gotten a lot of buzz since release.
Tyler Shultz, a huge Spider-Man fan, Youtuber and Twitch streamer, reached out to Insomniac before the games release asking them to put a wedding proposal for him into their game. The twist comes now after release and the inclusion of the proposal message in the final game.
Since Tyler asked Insomniac to put the message into the game, he and his partner have since split in a dramatic fashion. Tyler took to his Youtube channel to explain the situation, saying:
The thing that sucks about this Easter egg is the date that I’m making this video now, three, four weeks ago, my girlfriend dumped me to go with my brother. Basically throwing away the five years that we had together and spitting in my face basically, saying this isn’t even the way she wanted to be proposed to, and left me. This might go down in history as the saddest Easter egg. Maybe, I don’t know.
Fans seem to agree that this being immortalized into such a popular game is a sore spot. Tyler says that he is still greatly enjoying Spider-Man and doesn’t think Insomniac needs to remove it. Since then, Insomniac has reached out to Tyler saying that they would be willing to take it out of the game in a future patch.
Easter eggs have been a staple of games for decades now, but there are very few stories that end up like this. What’s your favorite Easter egg in Spider-Man? Be sure to leave a comment below and tell us what you think!
