A new Metroidvania game comes to consoles today. The game, whose full title is Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread, spent some time in Early Access on Steam before its release. Today, Blast Brigade launches on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
Blast Brigade is a 2D action game set on a tropical island. The titular brigade must defeat Dr. Cread and save the world. Here’s a (slightly) more specific summary, courtesy of today’s press release:
“Blast Brigade tells the story of a diverse group of special agents from across the globe who must unite against the evil genius Dr. Cread. When a seemingly routine mission escalates into a desperate race to prevent doomsday, the heroes must work together to not only save the world, but also safeguard the ancient heritage of an island paradise.”
If it sounds like a cliché, over-the-top action game or movie, that’s because it is. Blast Brigade‘s fully voice-acted cutscenes are inspired by ’80s action films. Similarly, the gameplay takes inspiration from previous Metroidvania games:
“With level design influence taken from classic Metroidvania titles, players can explore and backtrack through a variety of interconnected levels. Unique biomes and regions including treetop jungle villages, cliffside prison facilities, the classic volcano base, and ancient temples filled with secrets are waiting to be explored.”
Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread Features Four Protagonists
In Blast Brigade, you play as four characters. Jeff, Galahad, Shura, and Vortex all bring something different to the table in terms of gameplay, and their various tools and skills will help the player progress. According to the game’s Steam page:
“Switch between four playable characters on the fly, each equipped with unique abilities to help you progress! Blast off with all-American hero Jeff, channel the deadly rage of Shura, decommission enemies as the cyborg Scotsman Galahad, and help the chakram-wielding Vortex reclaim her island.”
Currently, the game has very positive reviews on Steam. Will it rise through the ranks to become a beloved classic? Only time will tell. If this new Metroidvania game has piqued your interest, you’re in luck. Blast Brigade vs. the Evil Legion of Dr. Cread launches today on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
