It is always a good thing to tip workers what they deserve and even more. Sometimes, though, people can be divided on whether a waitress deserves a tip. This is why a Michigan woman divided the internet over a $1000 tip. The conversation stirred because many people pointed out that the waitress wore a Cartier bracelet. Despite this, some people defended the waitress and felt she deserved the tip. The disagreement in the comments shouldn’t take away from how heartwarming the video is.
In the video shared by the Michigan woman, she and others are at Holland Michigan China Inn. They call their waitress, who comes running to them. She then said she was running because she worried they needed something. The creator then asks her the biggest tip she received while working there. Unfortunately, the waitress shared that the biggest tip she received was $20. She even says, “20 [dollars] is like diamond,” and that she will show everybody the bill. This is how excited she gets.
The Michigan Woman Giving the Waitress a Huge Tip
The caption written by the Michigan woman also pointed out that this specific waitress hasn’t been receiving enough tips recently. For example, a big table didn’t tip her enough right before the woman and her company arrived. The waitress, Tanny, jumps in shock when one of the men sitting with the Michigan woman gives her a $100 tip. She asks him in disbelief several times, “Are you serious?” When he confirms that he wants to give her this tip, she says, “Oh God, thank you.”
They then told her they plan to give her a $1000 tip. Once again, Tanny jumps back in shock before asking if they are “playing” with her, which they deny. “Today is your day, okay?” one of the men says. “She [the Michigan woman] wanted to bless you,” he adds. The Michigan woman then tells Tanny “You’re working hard. You deserve more tips. You deserve this for all the days that people didn’t tip you.” At this point, the waitress is still in shock at the whole situation. Her eyes even get teary.
People Reacting to the Tip
The internet was divided on how they should react toward this tip. Some were happy for Tanny and thanked the Michigan woman for what she did. “Awww she looked like she had been crying,” one person wrote. Another person wrote, “People who don’t tip should see this.” The video got popular to the point it reached someone who used to work with Tanny. They described her as “wonderful.” They then added, “Thank you for your kindness, she truly deserves it all.” When someone shared where the place was, people wrote that they would go there just to see her.
Despite all these positive comments, some people focused on what Tanny was wearing in her hand when the Michigan woman tipped her. One person wrote, “is that a cartier bracelet she’s wearing?” Another person asked “Is she wearing a Cartier bracelet or is that a regular nice gold bracelet.” Quickly, a debate started in the replies to this comment. Someone said in response, “I was gifted Cartier jewelry and a real gold chain that I wear everyday. Even if it was a cartier bracelet people still struggle.” The person who wrote the original comment doubled down. “I would say that is true you can struggle and still have a regular nice gold bracelet, but not Cartier,” they said.
The disagreement over the entire Cartier situation continued in other comments as well. Many people pointed out that they struggle but still own expensive jewelry. They can have it because someone gifted it to them or maybe they saved up to buy it. Both are possibilities, which explains the Cartier bracelet on Tanny. Even if it’s original and not fake, there is no law saying waitresses can’t wear expensive jewelry.
She deserves the tip, and her happiness is enough evidence that she really needs it. One person even pointed out that her movements showed how grateful she was for the Michigan woman. “Her [Tanny] putting your [sic] hand on her forehead was her showing you respect, this is a great video.” The good thing is that while some people saw that the Michigan woman shouldn’t have tipped Tanny, many sympathized with her. Several mentioned that they would go to where she works just to tip her. This should be the attitude because she deserves to wear nice things like any other worker.
