After five years of no definite answer, Minecraft released news of its new movie. Pushing for March 4th, 2022, Minecraft’s official website posted that things are looking up for the project and will move forward as planned. Writer/Director Peter Sollett states that the film will be live-action. A challenge for Minecraft to say the least. However, if this project is pulled off in live-action, the results will be outstanding.
As we all know, one of the things that make Minecraft different than other games is the “blocky” texture of the game. It’s what the game is known for. Releasing in 2011, Minecraft swept the gaming world with its blocky universe and lack of storyline. Now of course, later on, there was that spin-off. But how much of a storyline can you have when your goal is collecting resources. Kinda like Fortnite in the sense that there is no story there either. So what kind of storyline can we hope for in a Minecraft movie? Here’s a quick synopsis, courtesy of the game’s official site. The movie will tell:
“the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”
If the spinoff showed us anything, Minecraft is sure to succeed in almost every project they have. From merchandise to the spin-off to now a movie. The franchise has done well and only has had issues trying to solidify due to acting and directing interest. Warner Bros. has attempted to put someone in the directing chair for a long time and either they bail or are not interested.
Though I am sure Peter Sollett won’t let us down. With his work on Nick and Norah’s playlist, he displayed his sense of realism and use of the little details. That will be very useful in a project like this. He has also been involved with several TV series as director and writer. Many fans can’t wait to see how Peter Sollett captures the world of Minecraft on screen.
